Countertop Dishwasher Buying Guide (2026)

Tank or faucet hookup comes first

This single decision narrows the field by half. Hookup models hold six place settings and behave like small built-in machines, but they need a threaded faucet and occupy it during the cycle. Tank models hold about two place settings, need no connection, and can live anywhere near an outlet, at the cost of refilling and smaller loads.

Check your faucet before falling for a hookup model. Pull down sprayer faucets usually cannot accept the adapter, which makes a tank model the practical choice.

Measure height, then plate size

Most hookup models are 17.2 inches tall and tank models run 17 to 18 inches. Standard counter to cabinet space is around 18 inches, so measure your actual gap. Then measure your dinner plates: interiors in this category are happiest with plates up to about 10.5 to 11 inches.

Weight matters if the machine will move. Tank models range from about 26 to 36 lbs, hookup models from 43 to 46 lbs, which most people treat as permanent counter residents.

Buy this type if, avoid if

Buy a hookup model if:

  • You wash for three or more people, or cook with many prep dishes
  • Your faucet has a removable aerator with standard threads
  • You have a permanent counter spot with 18 inches of clearance
  • You want delay start and a stainless interior

Buy a tank model if:

  • Your lease or faucet rules out any connection
  • You are one or two people, or the machine is for a dorm, RV, or office
  • You want baby care or fruit wash modes in a portable unit

Avoid a countertop dishwasher if:

  • Your plates are all oversized and your pans are large, since most loads would stay hand washed
  • You have no counter space to give up permanently
  • You expect silent operation in a studio while you sleep nearby

Cycles and drying, honestly assessed

Useful cycles are heavy or intensive, normal, eco, glass, and a rapid option. Baby care and fruit wash are genuine extras on some tank models. Long cycle lists with near duplicate programs add little.

Drying is the weak point of the whole category. Most models rely on residual heat and ventilation, so plastics stay damp. A dedicated dry mode, as on the HAVA R01, or simply opening the door after the cycle, makes the biggest practical difference.

Detergent and running costs

Compact tubs need less detergent than full size machines. Powder or gel dosed to the manual avoids the over sudsing a full pod can cause in a small interior. Rinse aid noticeably improves glass results and drying in these machines.

Running costs are modest: a few gallons of water and a short heating cycle per load. For households replacing daily hand washing under a running tap, water use often goes down, not up.

Sizing walkthrough: measure, load, then decide

Work through three checks in order. First, measure the vertical gap between your counter and the underside of your upper cabinets, including any under-cabinet lighting. Hookup models from Danby, EdgeStar, BLACK+DECKER, and SPT are all 17.2 inches tall, while tank models run from 17.1 inches for the Farberware and COMFEE to 18.1 inches for the Hermitlux, HAVA, and NOVETE, so a gap that fits one format may reject the other.

Second, measure your largest everyday dinner plate. Interiors in this category are happiest with plates up to about 10.5 to 11 inches, and the HAVA only fits its roughly 11 inch plates loaded at an angle. Third, count a realistic day of dishes. Six place settings in a 21.7 inch wide, 43 to 46 lb hookup body covers a family day in one cycle; a two place setting tank body at 16.5 to 17.7 inches wide and 26.5 to 36.4 lbs covers one or two people and will run twice on heavy cooking days. Choose the smallest format that passes all three checks and the machine will fit both your counter and your routine.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Can I install a countertop dishwasher permanently?

Some owners plumb hookup models directly with a kit, but that may affect warranty and lease terms. The standard faucet connection is the intended, reversible method.

Do countertop dishwashers heat their own water?

Yes, they have heating elements that raise water temperature during the cycle, which is why hot water supply temperature is less critical than on older designs.

How do I drain a tank model without a sink nearby?

Route the drain hose into a bucket or large container at or below the hose outlet and empty it after the cycle. Keep the hose from kinking to avoid drain errors.

Are countertop dishwashers worth it for one person?

For many single occupants, yes: a small tank model run daily replaces the sink backlog, uses modest water, and costs far less counter space than a full size portable unit.
